THE EXORCIST meets DRAG ME TO HELL

Genres

Horror, Thriller

Why To Read

This script succeeds on the back of its impeccable atmosphere and tone, evoking the noir history of its Los Angeles setting to craft a horror thriller with masterfully sustained tension, supernatural creepiness, and an intricately plotted mystery. The writer accomplishes an original take on the possession genre by focusing on the aftershocks of a failed exorcism years earlier. Not only are the two leads dynamic, but the character of a man still struggling with the notoriety and psychological effects of having been possessed as a young adult is an innovative and fascinating story to tell, one which audiences have never seen before. Packed with haunting, visceral visuals and well-earned twists, this is a no-brainer horror hit in the making.

Biography

Marie Robinson began to write on her kindergarten desk. She lost crayon privileges, but gained the encouraging snickers of her peers. She later published newspaper articles, and in college, she wrote two plays and saw them produced. She also saw them bomb. Marie was undeterred, and drove across the country to Los Angeles to pursue writing for television and film. Marie found work as a script supervisor and production assistant on low budget films. Physical production was invaluable. It taught Marie to write fast and for any budget. Marie also joined a theater group that performed sketches in West Hollywood and Inglewood. And in the wee hours of the night, she wrote scripts. One after the other. Marie found some success in her work, but soon realized a creative life does not follow a linear path, and traversing the ups and downs is essential to sustain the marathon of a writing career. Recently, Marie saw her first short story published, and she has placed in several screenplay contests and festivals. At present, Marie is very glad she entered the Tracking Board Screenplay Contest and she is delighted to have both of her features land on the top seventy-five list.

THE BUCKET LIST meets NEVER LET ME GO

Genres

Why To Read

Deftly balancing absurdist humor with the more dramatic themes of mental illness, this script is a wonderful read which celebrates all those who feel like outcasts. It touches on all the keystone elements of the genres at hand without feeling preachy or going overboard. An emotional rollercoaster that will have you laughing, crying, and thinking in equal messure.

Biography

Growing up in a small Wisconsin town, Brianne and Cassandra Jaskulski learned the value of creativity at a young age, writing, illustrating, and publishing their own series of female-driven comic books before the age of ten. In high school, they co-edited the school newspaper and wrote plays and short scenes for the theater department and forensics team. By the time college rolled around, Brianne and Cassandra knew what they wanted to do with their lives: create strong characters and stories with the power to move and inspire people. They began working for Marquette University's film, TV, and radio departments, where they served as TV and movie critics, short film writers, directors, actors, and editors, and WMUR DJs. Since relocating to the West Coast, Brianne and Cassandra have kept busy writing their second feature script and working as freelance researchers for upcoming film projects. They also run a film and TV critiques blog and indulge in frequent horror movie marathons.

THE FINEST HOURS meets DEADLIEST CATCH

Genres

Drama, Adventure, Action

Why To Read

A character-driven drama heightened by the contained setting of the fishing boat, this manuscript is a master class in subtle tension. The set up forces the protagonist to confront his rivals while working alongside them, and it's incredibly effective. Add to that the fact that they are all attempting an illegal fishing activity and the tension becomes palpable. The writing is dynamic and descriptive, painting a vivid picture, while the regional dialogue is pitch perfect, and the plot moves along at a perfect pace. The characters and relationships are intensely layered, in part due to the flashbacks effortlessly integrated into the high stakes action on the boat. With life and death stakes, the difference between failure and success teetering on a knife's edge, and love and friendship being closely examined, this manuscript is as intense as it can get.

Biography

I'm originally from the Lancashire fishing port of Fleetwood, but moved to Liverpool in2002 for a temping job in the typing pool at Mersey TV, a production company responsible for several long running UK soap operas. This accidentally led to a career in television after Igot a job I didn't know existed until that point - as a soap opera storyliner. I subsequently graduated to become a fully fledged script writer and have since written episodes of Hollyoaks, Coronation Street and Doctors. However, my first passion is prose and alongside this I have been working on my novel - Deadlegs.

A classic comedy premise fleshed out with great dialogue, a readable, engaging visual style, and distinct, likable characters. Annette and her son have a wild, unique dynamic that adds levity and quirkiness to the timeless structure of this well-written script, which has a lot of heart amidst its hilarious cynicism. The rare comedy that grabs a wide ranging audience, because it's all rooted in family at the end of the day.

Biography

Chase has lived many lives - line cook, musician, communications director of a telecom startup - but through them all, one passion has remained constant: his love of storytelling. When his first feature script I KILLED BUDDY CLOY landed on THE BLACK LIST (2008) he and his writing partner signed with WMA. After co-directing and co-writing an award-winning short BRIDGE (2009), he and his partner developed a feature project with Mandeville Films' David Hoberman and director Jeffrey Nachmanoff (Traitor, Homeland). In 2013, while working in the production department on films such as Disney's SAVING MR. BANKS, he embarked on a solo writing career. His first television spec was selected for the 2nd round of Sundance's 2016 Episodic TV lab and was the #1 script on The Black List website for the month of August. Currently he's assisting writer/director/producer Kari Skogland (dir. The Walking Dead, House of Cards) with her upcoming slate of television projects and working on his debut novel. Recently, Cinestory chose the teleplay-version of The Loving Wrath of Eldon Quint as their best drama winner, and he is now in contention for their tv/digital fellowship.

HAIL, CAESAR! meets THE AMERICANS

Genres

Comedy, Drama, Adventure

Why To Read

A postmodern farce in the style of Thomas Pynchon or David Foster Wallace, this manuscript deftly combines Cold War anxieties and Hollywood satire into a truly wild and unpredictable narrative. The writing is very strong, and the writer has a subtle and detached voice that ends up providing hilarious commentary on international relations, the entertainment industry, and much more. The trio of main characters each have intricately drawn backstories which enrich and inform who they are in the present, preventing this from sliding so far into the comedic as to lose sight of the emotional core.

Biography

I'm a former television writer (MURPHY BROWN and BABY TALK), and The Spy Who Loathed Me is the first part of a trilogy of comedy novels. I hold a Masters Degree from the USC Professional Writing Program, and have ghostwritten about a half dozen non-fiction, 'personal biographies' for a small private firm, as well as another non-fiction book to be published this November by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. Along the way, I've written for newspapers and magazines, performed standup comedy, appeared in a number of plays (mostly comedy) and taught comedy writing as well.

Why To Read

Imagine if Jessica Jones woke up on Gilmore girls and became BFFs and training partners with Buffy. That, in a nutshell, is the perfectly crafted lead of this show. As if the story of a single mother going back to school to provide for her family wasn't enough, this brilliantly self-aware, cynical, and amusing pilot provides one of the most fun, action-packed, humor-filled rides we've ever taken. Add a little magic, consistently witty dialogue, and the looming threat of the apocalypse, and this somehow never over-the-top series not only delivers must watch, life scheduling TV, but it does so with a cast of characters actors will fight to play.

Biography

As the youngest sibling, making up stories came as second nature to me. It wasn't until after years of managing bars and listening to other people's tall tales that I decided to start writing my own. I bit the bullet and went to university as a mature student when I was 31 years old. I graduated from Screen Academy Scotland in 2012 with an MA in Screenwriting. Some of my previous screenplays have placed highly and reached the finals of prestigious screenplay competitions. I live in a small town outside Edinburgh with my family and our wonky pet fish that is forced to listen to my ideas. He's very judgemental. I also work part-time at the National Library of Scotland. When I'm not writing, I love to spend my time throwing dinner parties, binge watching television series and secretly playing with my six year old son's toys.

Genres

Drama, Thriller

Why To Read

An expertly crafted crime thriller that gorgeously blends a familiarly dramatic crime formula structure with that of an intriguing and captivatingly entertaining serial killer thriller that will tee up seasons of proceduralized serial drama. Centered on a lead that delicately balances his inviting appearance with that of his dark fascinations and complex history, this series does a brilliant job of bouncing between the dynamic cast that fills out the ensemble, and the riveting tales being uncovered each week. Suspenseful, haunting, and deeply thrilling, the audience will live on the edge of their seats with each word, and whichever actor steps into the lead role will own a night of television for years to come.

Biography

In a recent past life Chris Lee worked as a white-collar criminal defense attorney in Manhattan, defending corrupt politicians, CEOs, and foreign princes. But he thought that he would sleep better at night if he was writing about such characters, instead of for them. Before driving west to attend the Writing for Screen & Television MFA program at USC he also worked at the Manhattan D.A.'s office and led disaster relief teams in Mississippi. A graduate of Dartmouth and Penn Law, he grew up in a dysfunctional family of liberal lawyers and gun-toting hawks. It was as weird as it sounds.
