Radicalized - An unassuming Arab-American college student gets recruited by the FBI to infiltrate a suspected terrorist cell on his campus, only to become radicalized himself in the process.

HOMELAND meets GREEK

Genres

Drama

Why To Read

Radicalized is strong, with confident, clear writing from a professional and experienced writer, memorable visual imagery, and a provocative premise that's sure to get people talking. Little things could be improved, such as conversation length and grammar errors in the series outline, but it's very easy to picture this pilot as a show. The writer's depiction of Muslims is more even-handed in this draft, and while it does seem hard to imagine rooting for a terrorist, the writer seems capable of pulling it off, as he consistently demonstrates his thoughtfulness, intelligence, and talent in this draft.

Biography

Albuliwi is an award-winning filmmaker born in Brooklyn, NY. He is a graduate of the American Film Institute Conservatory where he received a MFA in Directing. Recipient of the 2009 Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Television Directing fellowship, he worked on the FOX television series, Brothers. His debut feature film, Peace After Marriage, was winner of the Creative Promise Award at the Tribeca Film Festival and has screened at over 30 international film festivals. Prior to that, his AFI Thesis film, Azad, was one of five faculty selected thesis films which screened at the Directors Guild of America before going on to have its world premiere at the Heartland Film Festival.

Why To Read

Inarguably ambitious in scope, this script intricately interweaves multiple narrative chains with sharp thematic consistency in order to present a stimulating blend of drama and romance. The flashback scenes to a romance between two men during World War II in Japan feel truly original and cinematic, while the beautiful writing and dialogue shine through to craft the core characters into real, sympathetic people. With dual stories and themes of love, acceptance, and the forces that keep us apart, this is a touching story with a real message.

Genres

Why To Read

Overflowing with rebellious energy with the rush of 70s counterculture, this pilot feels young and alive in ways that will set it apart from most shows. With two compelling and relatable leads, the palpable New York setting and the punk rock aesthetic, this pilot is both nostalgic and cool, making it a potential hit with both young and old audiences.

Biography

I did Columbia's MFA. My previous placements include Scriptapalooza (2nd), PAGE (semi) and FD Big Break (semi), among others, and I've had scripts in development (briefly) with Madhouse and Maven Pictures. I'm currently working as a freelance story editor for the Oscar-winning writer/director Peter Hedges (About a Boy) - our most recent project was a reboot of Pinocchio for Disney. One Way or Another began with a short documentary about Underground NYC Genius Lauren Agnelli. Lauren told me she was writing a memoir. I said I'd love to read it. I fused her unpublished pages with my own obsessive period fandom to make this script. Currently I'm co-directing my first indie feature. I consider myself a punk, even though I don't have tats or piercings, because I believe in the movement mantra: be your fucking self, all the fucking time. Possibly interesting facts about the Launch Pad pilot ONE WAY OR ANOTHER:* Got a '7' in its first Black List review.* The subject of the series knows several members of Blondie and met Debbie Harry back in the day. She'd maybe remember.

Before moving to Los Angeles and getting an MFA in Film from Chapman University he earned a degree in Ancient History, a degree that while not leading to immediate employment has helped serve as the inspiration for many scripts and projects. He has been writing continuously since college in genres ranging from action to horror to comedy, and his work has been recognized in several competitions. Why To Read

This manuscript is full of fantastic elements that keep your eyes glued to the page. Whether it's the space station keeping the Earth alive, the backstory of the war and the UN's use of slavery to build the ship, or even the use of the artificial sun as a weapon, this sci-fi tale brings it all to the table. This is a manuscript that takes full advantage of its genre and packs the story with great moral quandaries and conversations regarding government, war, politics, and religion. This is what the genre was built to do, and this writer takes full advantage. Meanwhile, the action-packed opening will leave you breathless as it sets up a story filled with twists, turns, and thematic depth. This is easy to see as the next great space opera, with its sprawling ensemble and endless dramatic material.

LOOKING meets LOUIE

Genres

Why To Read

This topical project tackles homosexuality from an entirely new angle. It's not a gay man struggling to be accepted as gay, but rather a gay man who discovers his friends only have enough energy to support one change in sexuality in his life. The situations he gets himself into are both objectively funny and 'can't look away' cringe-worthy. A stellar supporting cast adds consistently funny tension as well as dramatic progression for Gary in his search to find his true self. It's incredibly relevant, accessible, and original.

Biography

Benjamin Kawaller moved to LA three years ago from Brooklyn (his hometown), where he'd been producing and directing independent theater. His first job out here was at UTA, where he started in the mailroom and then worked in the talent department. After UTA he worked for TV and film producer Dan Jinks at CBS TV Studios. In October of 2014 he started pursuing writing full time. THE NEXT BEST THING recently won best comedy in the JHRTS pilot competition. It is also currently a semifinalist in the Austin Film Festival's 2015 Teleplay Competition for best comedy pilot, ranking among the top 1% of submissions. Another pilot recently placed as a semifinalist in the 2015 PAGE International Screenwriting Awards. He has a degree in sociology from Harvard University, where he graduated in 2007.

Why To Read

The writing is superb, the dialogue is quick-witted and true to life, and the characters are all well developed. The story hits on universal themes: friendship, family, loyalty, and the like. This is a good one. GOOD WILL HUNTING meets PUSHER.

Biography

Bisanne Masoud and Talia Gonzalez have been writing as a team for five years. They met at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where they both studied acting at the Atlantic Theater Company Acting School, and later switched their focus to writing. One year they made a New Year's resolution: to write a play by the time the year was done. Their first collaborative effort FACESPACE sold out several performances during its New York run in the 2009 Midtown Theatre Festival, and was nominated for two festival awards. It took the Gold Prize in the Hollywood Screenplay Contest, and was also a Finalist for the North American Actors Association (NAAA) Play Reading Festival in London. After FACESPACE the team decided to focus on television and film writing. Since then they have completed six spec scripts, two original comedy pilots, an original drama pilot, two features, and a short. Bisanne previously worked as Writer's Assistant to Davey Holmes, an EP on Showtime's SHAMELESS. Previously staffed on MTV's TEEN WOLF, Bisanne and Talia are currently working as Story Editors on iZOMBIE for the CW. They are also working on a new drama pilot based on Mairghread Scott's comic TRIAGE.

Genres

Why To Read

Clever, edgy, and teetering so close to the edge of absurdity, that written by almost anyone else this pilot would fall under its own ambitious weight. Instead, the writer does such a brilliant job of beautifully weaving an extraordinarily lush and verdant imagination with a series of over-the-top themes and shockingly insightful moments that it would be impossible for viewers not to find these characters oddly endearing. With no shortage of topics this series can brazenly dissect, this is a show that will provide seasons of misadventures that will remind audiences how thought provoking, philosophical, poignant and even completely bonkers great comedy can be.

Biography

Brandon Beck is the co-writer and director of the Channel 101-winning webseries My Racist Toaster, which is exactly what it sounds like. His play The Wheel of Invention premiered at the inaugural Los Angeles Theatre Festival where it received runner-up for Best Musical, which is astounding considering it's not even technically a musical. An expanded version debuted as part of the 2016 Hollywood Fringe Festival. His writing has been featured at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre NY, on Blue Rock Public Radio, Live Foreign Film Dub, and in several independent pilots and webseries. Originally from North Carolina, he graduated from the Conservatory of Theatre Arts & Film at SUNY Purchase with a BFA in Dramatic Writing (TV Concentration) and was part of the first cohort of the TV Writers Studio at LIU-Brooklyn where he received an MFA in Writing & Producing For Television. He is an avid musician and improviser, and is perfectly comfortable admitting publicly that he has seen the band Phish 46 times.

Why To Read

An enjoyable and funny read, the writing and dialogue in this script are exceptional. Presenting the reader with the right amount of slapstick, witty dialogue, and nerd humor, this script has a little something for everyone. While the tone is established early on, allowing the audience to expect some of the hijinks that are to come, the script goes to wild and unpredictable places that will delight any reader. Meanwhile, the inclusion of several strong female characters within the group of guys is a refreshing upending of genre conventions, and it's great to see them comfortable in the woods while the guys run around like chickens with their heads cut off.

Biography

Hailing from Tauranga, New Zealand, Brendon Udy discovered his passion for screenwriting while studying film and television at Auckland University. After some local success writing and directing short films, he made the shift to features in 2013, and decided to fly across the world to attend a screenwriting convention in Hollywood. It was here that he had the good fortune of meeting Victoria Rau, while waiting in line to pitch, and they have been writing together ever since. Together they have penned four features to date, with one script making the Top 10% of the Nicholl Fellowship in 2016, while a second script was named a PAGE Semifinalist. In 2012 Brendon and his closest friends embarked on a Lord of the Rings themed stag weekend, where they roamed the New Zealand countryside dressed as hobbits, elves and dwarves in a blur of alcohol-fueled hilarity. The events of this stag weekend inspired his and Victoria's current script, The Fellowship. After forging a successful career in marketing, Brendon made the move to London in 2015, where he currently works as a social media manager for a thriving digital agency.

Drama

Why To Read

Mixing the socially conscious period drama of MAD MEN with the fun and intrigue of a primetime soap, this dives into the dynamic 60s through the unique lens of the flourishing cosmetic industry. Engaging revolutionary themes of female oppression and empowerment that are still relevant today, this pilot combines a headstrong and determined protagonist with a deep ensemble cast and an intelligent, dark humor to craft an exciting and provocative world bursting with potential.

Biography

I'm originally from Texas, but rejected the God, grits and gravy for a writing career in balmy LA. I'm the middle of five, which explains the psychosis as well as a wealth of knowledge to tell stories about complicated characters and over-sized families. Before I left Texas, I went to the University of Texas and was active in their film program and got to meet one of my favorite filmmakers, Richard Linklater, whose movie Boyhood mirrors much of my experience growing up in the Lone Star state, save for my queer sensibility. That queer sensibility also draws me to stories about outsiders and underdogs because I know the feeling of hanging on the outs and struggling for the ins. Most days you can find me reading a book at a coffee shop (watch out for my coffee snobbery), following the latest political fiasco (go Hillary!), or laying on Venice beach.

Genres

Action, Thriller, Drama

Why To Read

With an exciting concept and efficient, effective storytelling, this is a thriller that is begging to be on the big screen. The contained nature of the action - taking place almost entirely in the plane, both before and after the crash, will keep the budget down and adds tension. This script is packed with smart decisions and thrilling moments, adding complication after complication that demand creative solutions to drive the narrative forward. The characters have distinct personalities and emotional arcs that raise the stakes while the relationships feel real and provide depth to this suspenseful ride.

I am managed by Jenny Wood at Elevate and am looking for both US and UK agents.
